- Develop a written, personal vision (your life compass)
- Set Roles and Goals (your plan)
- Pre-Week Plan (execute and Do What Matters Most)

1 - Develop a Personal, Written Vision
Your personal vision is your life compass. It provides direction, purpose, and it articulates your why. It clarifies what matters most in life (and what does not). You develop your vision by listing your life roles, and for each role writing down a concise statement that captures who you are, where you’re going, and what you’d like to accomplish in that life role (see the below example).
2 - Set Roles and Goals
While your vision is your compass, your “Roles and Goals” are your map and plan for realizing your vision. How do you set roles and goals? For each of the roles listed in your vision, set 1-4 SMART goals relevant to each role. Here are some tips and ideas for achieving 95% of your goals in 2025. Below is an example of what this may look like.
3 - Pre-Week Plan!
At the start of each week, review your vision and goals, and then list your life roles. For each role, determine 1-5 priorities or action items that matter most that week. Schedule your priorities first, and then prioritize your schedule. You’ll take your vision and goals into your daily schedule. You’ll focus on and do what matters most. This is where the rubber meets the road! Here’s what this looks like:

Do this with family and your work teams! There is strength and accountability (and fun and greater purpose) in numbers. So, do this with your family or your team at work. Take time to discuss and develop your vision. Use these guides or invite them to read the book Do What Matters Most. As a group develop your personal visions, set roles and goals, and practice pre-week planning! It will be life changing, and they will thank you.
