Welcome back to the summer leadership series — Week Three! This week we’re diving into principle #3: “Set Roles and Goals,” with a Kobe Bryant case study.
Last week we explored leading with a vision – your life compass that provides direction and purpose. But a vision without actionable goals is just a dream. This week is about bridging the gap between where you are and where you want to be.
What Are Vision-Focused "Roles and Goals"
Goals are the stepping stones that transform your vision into reality. They break down your big picture into manageable, measurable actions. While your vision answers “where am I going,” goals answer “how will I get there.” Effective goals are specific, measurable, and directly connected to your personal vision statements.
How to Set Roles and Goals
Start with your vision statements from last week. For each life role, identify 1-3 specific goals that will move you closer to that vision. Use the SMART framework: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Write them down and review them regularly. Remember, goals should stretch you but remain realistic. Here is one person’s example of roles (black), vision statements (purple), and goals (blue):

Kobe Bryant Case Study
Kobe Bryant’s vision was clear: become the greatest basketball player of all time. But vision alone didn’t make him legendary – his relentless goal-setting did.
Kobe broke his grand vision into specific, measurable goals. He set daily practice targets, seasonal performance benchmarks, and career milestones. His famous 4 AM workouts weren’t random – they were calculated steps toward his vision. He set goals for improving specific skills, studying opponents, and even mental toughness.
When injuries threatened his career, Kobe didn’t abandon his vision. Instead, he adapted his goals, focusing on leadership, mentoring younger players, and maximizing his remaining seasons. His five NBA championships and 18 All-Star selections weren’t accidents – they were the result of vision-driven goal setting.
So, Now What?
Your vision gives you direction, but goals give you momentum. Take your vision statements from last week and create 2-3 specific goals for each life role. Make them challenging but achievable, and most importantly, make them yours. Write them out. Post them where you will regularly see them. Review them each week as you pre-week plan and you’ll know and do what matters most.
And, don’t delay. Like Kobe said, “The biggest mistake we make in life is thinking we have time.” Make today the first day of your life by design. That’s becoming your best!

“There will never be a more perfect time to pursue your dreams and goals than right now.”— Kobe Bryant
