The Heart of the Start

This leadership message today is about the heart of the start. You may ask yourself what is the heart of the start?

Well, it is having the heart to get something going. We hear all the time these quotes about you don’t have to be a great leader to start. You just have to start to be a great leader. And how true is that?

The question is how do we really get going? Because this makes all the difference being able to accomplish things and especially the things that matter most in our lives.

How do we make the habit of getting things going?

By the way one of the great principles we talk about all the time is Never Never Give Up. We may make adjustments. We may have to step back. But then we keep going forward. We rarely talk about getting the thing going in the first place. And so that’s what I wanted to spend a few minutes on.

What really caused me to think about this recently… We held a full day seminar for a tremendous client. It’s a financial services company. During the seminar, we actually have people work together and talk about the principles and the concepts. And at the end identify the two or three things they may want to work on that would make a difference. Well, I happen to be in the back watching Rob present and enjoying the day.

The end of the day, one of the things we do is set up a 30 day accountability program. I was going to do my exercise regimen to Ron Williams burn and build workouts. This is a 45 minute intense workout. So I shared with my partner, I’m going to put it into my rotation, two of these a week.

I don’t look forward to them because they’re not easy. So then I got to thinking, all I have to do to start is just get going. So I just get my television set up, get the CD ready put out the equipment, push the button and off we go. That’s all I have to do is push the button and then I am good to go. I don’t have to think about it. If I’m going to go out and walk a couple of miles. And I know that I’m ready to go. All I have to do is just start walking down our driveway. I’m good to go.

This is what it takes to start, to have something clearly in mind and just get going.

People ask all the time, “How can I have the heart of the start?” I’d like to recommend at least a couple of things that have come to mind. One is to have these three things in place that help get your thoughts clearly lined up so that you can start on the important things:

A clear vision which is the idea for the direction you want to go in life.
Second is to have clearly written out yearly goals and these are inspiring these are things that you want to accomplish. So for example it might be exercise four or five times a week. Well there’s the goal of course would be represented in other areas of your life other things that you want to do about reading books about things you may want to do professionally or with your family.
The third part of this dynamic triple team is pre-weak planning
Pre-weak planning and has to do with what matters most this week and actually sketch it out by day, taking a few minutes during the weekend. What will I do of the things that matter most in life. It’s this flow of ideas that helps you be able to know where the button is so that when that day comes you might just do a mental preview the night before and then just mentally think about the days you see it on your weekly plan that you’ve already thought about. And then when I see exercise for those five days and the Ron Williams exercise on these two days now I wake up and actually see this taking place. I just push the button. I walk out. I know when I’m going to do it it might be to make an important call. It might be to get married. In other words this is part of the flow.

The first step of a thousand mile journey begins with that first step. That’s what a friend told me not long ago, it’s as true today as it’s ever been. So let’s each work on having the heart of the start of making it the habit of getting things going.

These are few ideas ways to do it. Hope this idea’s been helpful to you?

We have something called the 5 Minute Leadership Makeover (http://5minuteleadershipmakeover.com/). It’s three great, very brief videos they give some ideas that you can start on today.

So fun visiting with you. Wish you all the best have a good day!
