The Steps to Maximize Your Success

Step 1 As you begin to develop your vision, think about these questions:

  • What do you really want to achieve in life? What contributions do you want to make to others, your organization, your community, and the world?
  • What are the unique skills, talents, and abilities that you can build upon for the benefit of others? List your unique skills or talents.
  • How do you hope others will describe you when you are nearing the end of your life? How do you hope others will describe your organization?
  • As you contemplate what you (or your organization) are capable of accomplishing, what idea or though takes your breath away?
  • If you had unlimited time and resources and could do whatever you want, what would that be?

Step 2

  • Step 1 – Review your vision and the key roles in your life. Whether you are doing this as an individual, a couple, a team, or within an organization, you being by aligning your goals with your vision.
  • Step 2 – Divide your life into key roles. These roles might include parent, friend, manager, employee, professional, student, etc. You also have the “personal” role – maintaining your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.
  • Step 3 – Develop annual goals in each role using the SMART method. Research shows the more specific and measurable a goal is, the more likely it is to be achieved. The SMART method is a great way to create and achieve high-quality goals. SMART refers to setting goals that are: Specific Measurable Achievable Relevant Time Specific
  • Step 4 – Share your goals. Send your goals to a few friends, mentors, advisers, or others who you admire and respect who can give feedback that is work following.
  • Step 5 – Develop a plan and set mile stones. Determine what you’ll do in each step, which markers or milestones along the way.
  • Step 6 – Put your goals in a prominent place. Put your written goals and plan in a place where you can see them often. Review them frequently so they remain fresh in your mind.

Step 3

  • Step 1 – Review your vision and annual goals. This helps you put your week and everything that you’re about to do in the proper perspective. As you plan your week, you can be thinking about what you should do this week to support the accomplishment of your goals.
  • Step 2 – Look ahead one to three months, or even further out, in your master calendar. Is there anything you need to do this week to prepare for something that’s still a couple of months away?
  • Step 3 – Enter into your calendar all of the meetings and other scheduled events that you have planned for that week. Be sure to leave plenty of space between commitments to provide for flexibility and those many unexpected things that may pop up.
  • Step 4 – Identify what matters most that week in each role. This is the most powerful step, and the one that’s a game changer! Stay focused on what matters most, giving priority to what is most important. Come up with two or three things that you can do this week in each role.
  • Step 5 – Determine a time during the week when you’ll do each item you listed under each of the roles. That way, you will have all of your items scheduled, and you’ll know when you’ll do each of them.

There are many who set 2 alarms on Sunday, one in the morning and one in the evening to help them remember. The art is the start.
All is not lost! Take some time on Monday or whatever day you are in and plan the rest of your week, mid week planning is better than no planning.
First of all its great that you have so many things you want to accomplish! The action items under each role require some thought/pondering on what is most important. Consider what actions in that role would have the greatest impact, or is of highest priority. This can help filter out items that may be good but not best.
